The Lapsed Humanist
Periodic releases of excess ruminating
Back in the day, (Fall 2012-Spring 2013), I fancied myself a low-rent David Fricke; music writer, album reviewer, gig guru. For my spell at Vancouver Weekly, I was grateful to spend some time, unpaid obviously, writing about musicians I admire, the new releases that short of being trendy, were life affirming. To me! It was a fun slice of a gig. I will be posting some of my clippings as an act of preservation. You can find more at https://vancouverweekly.com/author/jason-motz/.
Here are some of the highlights from my VW days. To get your beak wet, here's a fireball review of the legendary Wanda Jackson, kicking up the dust in downtown Vancouver to a devoted crowd. As the good Dr. John would say, 'what a night.' https://vancouverweekly.com/the-queen-of-rock-cannot-be-stopped/ Billy Bragg. I just love the man. A musician, author, activist, all around good bloke. I enjoyed myself on the night of this review, as always, and was happy to talk football with him afterwards. Amazing how troubled the world seemed in 2012; but who could have predicted the nuttery that followed? https://vancouverweekly.com/this-bragg-is-your-bragg/ On occasion, I dabbled in reviewing memoirs. This one by Richard Hell was an interesting read, although I recall it less positively than this review would suggest. https://vancouverweekly.com/the-ramblings-of-a-clean-tramp/ Last, and certainly different … Realtor Porn! Just as HGTV was trending with a slew of realtor-starring vehicles, I got to talk with two of them, Sarah and Phil of Urban Suburban. https://vancouverweekly.com/move-over-reality-tv-make-way-for-realty-tv/
